The time is now
For the Dallas Cowboys, the time is now. It's one hour before kickoff to Game 10 of the 2008 season, and for Dallas no game all year is more important than this.
The 'Boys are 5-4, having lost four of their past six games, and must beat Washington tonight in order to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
True, there's plenty of football still to be played. I'm not suggesting Dallas must win all seven of its remaining games in order to reach the postseason, but they do have to win tonight.
Only six teams from the NFC will make the playoffs: four divisional champions and two "Wild Card" teams. Since Dallas plays in the NFC East Division, it seems inevitable the divisional slot will be occupied by the New York Giants. That means the 'Boys are vying for one of the two Wild Card spots.
The main contenders for those two Wild Card spots are Washington (6-3) and Dallas from the East and Tampa Bay (7-3) and Atlanta (6-4) from the South. The Cowboys don't play Tampa Bay or Atlanta this year, so the only chance to directly improve their status is tonight.
Washington's 6-3 record includes a 26-24 win over the Cowboys. If Washington wins tonight, the Redskins would be two games ahead in the standings, but the season sweep of Dallas would in effect put Washington three games ahead of the Cowboys. To catch the 'Skins, Dallas would be forced to win out and hope that Washington loses three of its final six games. Neither would be likely.
Win tonight, however, and Dallas would pull even with Washington and Atlanta in the standings at 6-4. Then, they'd need only to finish a game better than either of those squads the rest of the way.
Let's go Cowboys!
Thanksgiving is two weeks away. The least you can do is stay in the race until then!
